Welcome to Literacy in Mrs. Rayson's class!
We are going to have an awesome and exciting year! Nightly Reading: Each night students are expected to read between 30 and 45 minutes in their independent reading books. When reading, encourage your child to complete "signposts" to document their thinking while they read. After your child reads I encourage you to discuss their reading with them. HERE is a list of questions to help guide your discussion. Be sure to really discuss the book in a way that feels like a conversation. Your child will be able to open up and discuss if it feels more like they are sharing as opposed to the typical "Q & A". Really encourage them to be specific when they are discussing and have them refer back to the text often. This is a skill that is incredibly helpful in getting them to verify their thinking and in preparation for EOGs. Research Research Research!
In 5th grade students will have many opportunities to develop and enrich their research skills. There will be numerous projects, that will guide students to gathering their information and presenting all that they've learned! |
Book Levels: Students are tested using Fountas & Pinnell Running Records in order to determine their reading level. Once students are informed of their level, that is the level of books they should focus on when choosing a book. Students will be retested periodically throughout the year to measure their growth in reading. **Typically the higher the level the slower the growth. Books in our classroom are leveled. To check to level of your own book, check out Scholastic Book Wizard. Be sure you are looking at Guided Reading levels. |
